European Court of Justice (ECJ) has finally ruled that the popular ride hailing service firm Uber is a transport company and not a digital service firm.
Uber had argued that it was an information society service which is assisting people to contact with each other electronically and is not a cab firm.
The matter attracted legal attention when Uber was told to follow local taxi rules in Barcelona.
On the decision ruled by ECJ, Uber said that the verdict would affect a little only to the way it operated in Europe, though experts think otherwise.
In its ruling, the European Court Of Justice said that a service whose purpose is to connect, by using smartphone application and for remuneration and non-professional drivers are using their own vehicle to serve persons who wish to make urban journeys must be considered as “a service in the field of transport”.
